Originally a limited edition timepiece that became quite successful, finally gets a proper new production release to fulfill the desires of all its admirers. Zenith has produced a reintroduction to their “Zenith Pilot Cronometro Tipo CP-2 Flyback” with two distinct case options.

What we have here is the revival of the famous “Cairelli” model that was issued to the Italian military in the 1960’s. Just last year Zenith released a limited edition re-issue of only 1000 manufactured pieces of the famed “Cairelli” chronograph with a black dial and shinier look. Now it returns in what will be a production piece and more importantly some modern horology tweaks that have enhanced its desirability over last years limited edition model.

The original “Zenith Cairelli Chronograph Italian Air Force” (Ref#: A.M.I.), circa 1960’s

The 43mm case is available in either: bronze or aged stainless-steel, both with a transparent case back that allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement; unlike the solid case back on last years version. And it’s quite a marvel to get a glimpse of these watches, because at first glance they may easily seem to some as a truly old vintage watch. These pieces have been given such an aged look, it’s almost hard to believe they actually will only be released in February 2018. Certainly not appealing to all, but definitely a unique must-have for some.

Mounted to the case is a rotating bezel made with the matching metal to each case option. Equipped with two push-pieces for the chronograph and flyback functions, with a setting crown in-between them that has the embossed Zenith star logo on it. The central sword-shaped hands are rhodium-plated and faceted, with a thinner arrow-tipped chronograph hand. The Arabic numerals, central hands and tip of chronograph hand have all undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. Topped by a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides. Water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).

Time is exhibited on either a slate grey grained dial (aged stainless steel) or bronze grained (bronze) both of them feature Arabic numerals with a white printed ring of minute index markers circling the dial, with Arabic numerals for every five minute increment. There are two sub-dials: a 30-minute counter at the 3 o’clock position and a sub-seconds at the 9 o’clock position.
