Zenith is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Zenith’s most definitive and reputable movement: the “El Primero”. To adequately mark the occasion the brand has gone all out with an anniversary boxed set containing three chronographs: we’ve previously taken a peek at the original “El Primero” model of 1969; a “Chronomaster El Primero” with an optimized movement; now we’ll zoom in on the third piece the “Defy El Primero 21” model.

The “Defy” collection has served to showcase the expertise that can be found at the Zenith factory, as they craft innovative new paths in the horology industry. They showcased their first models back in 2017 with three versions, as we reviewed here.
Later that same year Zenith would further extend this model line with the revolutionary “Zenith Defy Lab” (Ref#: 27.9000.342/78.R582) in a highly exclusive limited edition of only 10 manufacture pieces. This watch was a winner at the “Grand Prix D’Horlogerie De Genève“. It intriduced what could potentially be a “game-changing” technical advancement by replacing the industry standard sprung balance with the use of a new oscillator made of monocrystalline silicon, as you can rad more about here.

The new 150th anniversary box-set edition comes in a 44mm case made of titanium with a transparent case back, which allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It comes equipped with flat push-pieces that operate the extra chronograph feature, as well as a setting-crown in-between them.
It maintains the same short lugs seen on previous models of the “Defy” collection that integrate seamlessly for the strap, providing a very comfortable wrist fit. All topped by a sapphire crystal, which assists with water resistance on this watch being able to reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on a skeletonized dial with metal applique hour index markers, followed by a grey ring with white printed minute index markers. On the inner flange is a second darker grey ring with a white printed 100-scale that includes Arabic numerals for every 10-minute increment. There is also a “chrono power reserve” indicator on the upper-half of the dial, while the logo inscription “Zenith” and “El PRIMERO 21” has been engraved directly on the sapphire crystal hovering over the dial.
In spite of this being a skeletonized, Zenith left it with three solid counters bearing the original color scheme and configuration present on all of these anniversary editions: a blue 30-minute counter at the 3 o’clock position; a silver 60-minute counter at the 6 o’clock position; and a grey sub-seconds at the 9 o’clock position. The central hands and hour index markers have been fitted with a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility; While the thinner chrono hands features the Zenith star logo as a counter-weight.
