Back in Baselworld 2017 we saw Zenith relaunch their Defy Collection. It has been hailed as one of the brands most impressive models and time appears to be consolidating its place among current production pieces. It now returns in a black ceramic option for the up and coming Baselworld 2019.

After a series of special limited editions, like the “Zenith Defy Zero G” editions which you can read more about here.

“Zenith Defy Zero G”

Or, the more recent “Zenith Defy Skeleton Range Rover Edition” (Ref#: 95.9001.670/77.R791) that offers a similar skeletonized dial (you can take a closer glance at here), although not as dark or detailed as this latest entry-level release.

“Zenith Defy Skeleton Range Rover Edition” (Ref#: 95.9001.670/77.R791)

This latest release comes in a 41mm case made of black ceramic with stain-brushed and polished surfaces. Its sapphire crystal case back allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement, which features a unique star-shaped rotors.

Mounted to the case is a raised circular bezel made of black ceramic set on a slightly angular tonneau-shape. The surface of the bezel has been satin-brushed, while the sides have been polished to provide enhanced contrasts.

It comes equipped with a riveted setting-crown. All topped by a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment, while also assisting with water-resistance being able to reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).

Time is exhibited on a black skeletonized dial with large rectangular ruthenium-plated hour index markers, while on the inner-flange we have a series of white printed second’s markers, with slightly longer minute markers. The central hands are also ruthenium-plated and have been facetted, along with the hour index markers, so they could slightly contrast among the overall dark color scheme that characterizes this dial.

Zenith has skeletonized this dial to the point where the entirety of the date wheel is exposed, while the numbers circle around and click into place in the aperture-window at the 6 o’clock position. This bare bones approach allows to completely admire the mechanical movement’s intricacies. Its structure has also been ingeniously designed in a “star” shape to mimic the Zenith logo. The thin central seconds also features a Zenith logo as a counterweight. The central hour and minute hands, plus the hour index makers have all been fitted with a green luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.

Zenith Defy Classic Black Ceramic

This “Zenith Defy Classic Black Ceramic” (Ref#: 49.9000.670/78.R782) is powered by a self-winding mechanical movement, caliber Elite 670 SK with 27 jewels and 28,800 Vph. It comes equipped with a silicon pallet lever and an escape wheel. Power reserve on this watch can last up to 50 hours, when fully wound.

Mounted to the watch is a black rubber strap with a checkered pattern, while secured to the wrist by a black DLC folding buckle. For more up to date information please visit the official Zenith website here.
