Vacheron Constantin has just returned to the market with a new version of their “Vacheron Constantin Traditionelle Perpetual Calendar Chronograph”. Although the term new isn’t completely accurate, since this watch at first glance seems very similar to its predecessor. But, things have changed a bit as or description below will reveal.
It has become a very common tactic by watch brands in general to not bet on totally new timepiece models, as much as being more about returning certain classics to their showcase, with some nuances for a novelty effect. In this case Vacheron Constantin for this model has improved and modified the movement. As well as modifying the dial, very slightly.
The round 43mm case is made of platinum with a fluted pattern. It has a screw-in crown between two pushers, on the right side of the case that control the chronograph movements. A transparent caseback allows to see the inner workings of this piece. The current movement housed inside it is a subtle tweaked version of the caliber 1141QP movement that has originally always powered this watch model and was based on the Lemania 27-70 movement.
Time is exhibited on a gray dial with darker shade of gray accents and luminous index hour markers. A white railroad minutes index ring circles the dial, while a second ring closer to the bezel features a tachymeter scale. Three sub-dials can also be seen: a 30-minute counter at the 3 o’clock position, a perpetual calendar with a moonphase inside it at the 6 o’clock marker and a sub-seconds at the 9 o’clock position.
There are also two aperture windows located in the center of the dial for the day of the week and the current month. Just over these windows is the Vacheron Constantin logo and the Maltese cross-shaped logo, aligned with the 12 o’clock position. And at a closer look we see the Moonphase has a melancholy moon and a happy moon, mimicking the traditional style seen on pocket watches form the past.
