Since 2006 Vacheron Constantin has been running a “Collection Excellence Platine” model line, which include exquisite timepieces made exclusively out of platinum and with limited series productions. For 2016 they’ve returned with a “Patrimony Perpetual Calendar” manufactures out of 950 platinum, in a 100 piece limited edition.

Platinum made not be everyone’s favorite metal, but it is certainly one of the most resistant and durable materials, being used for jewelry and watches. The 41mm case on this new Vacheron Constantin is completely platinum, except for its transparent sapphire caseback. Still as we gaze thru its backside at the inner moving parts, most of them are also carved from this precious metal. The watch includes a corrector pen to facilitate using the pushers found on the sides of the case, which serve to adjust its many complications.

Keeping with the platinum motif, the precisely grained sand-blasted dial is also made out of platinum, guaranteed by the inscription “Pt950” seen between the 4 and 5 o’clock position. Time is told via 18k white gold applied hour index markers and a circular minute track ring made of pearls.

This timepiece is equipped with three sub-dials: day of month is located near the 3 o’clock position; day of the week is shown near the 9 o’clock marker; and the months plus a leap year are displayed on a 48-mopnth diai at the 12 o’clock position. The hour and minute hands are made of 18k white gold, while the calendar, date and day hands are in blued steel. There is also a Moonphase located over the Vacheron Constantin logo, aligned with the 6 o’clock marker.

The perpetual calendar on this watch has been prepared to account for leap years. So, it isn’t necessary to set the calendar every time we encounter a month with less than 31 days. Instead the timepiece manages to detect and rectify time for those shorter months of a leap year cycle, as well as the 29th day of February, when it comes along.
