This Swiss Brand may well be responsible for ushering in barrel-shaped watches known as “tonneau” cases, back in 1912. Many associate this design to an Art-Deco look, due to its classical yet unique shape. Vacheron Constantin has decided to give this model a spin and reissue it to the horology market, introducing the: “Vacheron Constantin Malte Moon Phase and Power Reserve” & “Vacheron Constantin Malte Tourbillon Openworked”.
The bigger novelty of the two is hands down the “Malte Moon Phase and Power Reserve”. Up until now the “Vacheron Constantin Malte” model line was only available in a small second version or expensive tourbillon versions. So, this is a fortunate day for fans of the brand that had been awaiting a model with a more accessible price tag.
This 48mm tonneau case is made of 18k pink gold and features a flat caseback with curved casebands and lugs, which provides a comfortable fit to the wrist, as the lugs curve on the wrist. A pretty straightforward and functional design, with its share of adulation and uniqueness. Although its case size is quite large, its thickness is just slightly over 10mm, rendering it a relatively slim look.
The white dial exhibits gold baton hour index markers and large 6 and 12 stylized Roman numerals. Although the dial comes off as quite simple, there are a few complications. There is a sub-seconds over the 6 o’clock position; followed by a moonphase between 8 and 10 o’clock; and a power reserve gauge between the 10 and 11 o’clock positions. The “Vacheron Constantin” logo with its half Maltese cross-shaped symbol is placed at the 3 o’clock location. Most of this designs lay-out was made possible by the mechanical movement used on the watch, basing their initial intents on the caliber 1410 movement.
Vacheron Constantin Malte Moon Phase and Power Reserve
This “Vacheron Constantin Malte Moon Phase and Power Reserve” (Ref#: 7000M/B109) is powered by a hand-wound mechanical movement, caliber 1410 AS, with 20 jewels, 175 components and 28,800 vph. Power reserve on this timepiece can last up to 40 hours and water-resistance can reach up to 30m (96 feet). Mounted to this watch is a brown Mississippiensis alligator leather with alligator inner shell, hand-stitched, saddle finish, large square scales and an 18k pink gold buckle, with polished half Maltese cross-shaped logo.
The other watch being issued by Vacheron Constantin is the “Vacheron Constantin Malte Tourbillon Openworked” which now appears in an 18k pink gold edition, after its initial debut made out of platinum, at the SIHH 2014. It’s a timepiece that serves as a testament to what this historic Swiss brand is capable of producing. Not just as a technical achievement, but as an artistic one as well. For starters if you gaze into the movement, which you can via its exhibition caseback, or its skeletonized dial one can notice how the movement is shaped to adapt to the tonneau case.
So, the 38mm tonneau shaped case is made of 18k pink gold, so it differs from the platinum version, but it has been refined in such a manner it appears smaller, more compact. Even though both versions share the same dimensions and mechanical movement; the open-worked performed on the pink gold version has been more delicately executed. The bridges have been made narrower, which lead to a smaller font size being engraved on them. Overall these subtle touches have produced a more refined looking timepiece.
The skeletonized openworked silver sand-blasted dial exhibits time in its northern region with 18k pink gold hour index markers and a Roman numeral for the 12 o’clock position. And it’s broken down in to layers: an internal zone is made up of the sapphire glass with inked indications and the “Vacheron Constantin” logo;
while the external zone features the aforementioned opaline silvered color metal external ring, with a black painted minute-track and the hour markers and single Roman numeral.
There is also a 31-day calendar sub-dial located between the 1 and 3 o’clock position. Plus a power reserve indicator tactfully placed at the 10 o’clock location.
