The historic Vacheron Constantin brand is reaching deep in to their back catalogue as they release a pair of triple calendar watches, based on models that date back to the 1940’s. Introducing the Vacheron Constantin “Historiques 1942” and “1948 Triple Calendar” models.
It’s not that uncommon for this to occur, Vacheron Constantin already devised their “Historiques collection” with that goal in mind. So, these new timepieces are nearly rereleases of the models they are based on, but equipped with modern updates such as: materials, movements and sizings. We recently reviewed other timepieces form the “Historiques” collection here.
Although the “Historiques collection” tends to be crafted out of precious metals, Vacheron Constantin has actually issued the “Historiques 1942” model in a non-limited release in a stainless-steel case. While the originals were much smaller with a 35mm diameter, which would be considered small nowadays, but those were the trends at the time. Both these new timepieces are based on reference model 4240. It was a timepiece that helped cement Vacheron Constantin’s reputation and belongs to what the brand refers to as a “golden age” of watches.
The “Historiques Triple Calendar 1942” comes in a 40mm stainless-steel case with mildly textured humped sides and a transparent case back, which allows to view the inner working of the mechanical movement. And is topped by a “box-type glass” which raises its thickness by a bit, as this lateral picture (below) can show. Its equipped with ‘claw-type’ lugs, similar but different from the ‘horn’ lugs found on the “Vacheron Constantin Historiques Cornes De Vache 1955”, as we reviewed here.
Time on the “Historiques Triple Calendar 1942” is exhibited on a silvered sunburst satin-finished dial with black painted Arabic numerals, a blue painted date-track (or red burgundy accents, its optional by the end consumer) and finally a rail-road motif minute track, circling around the dial. It includes a day and month in rectangular apertures at the top portion of the dial, under the Vacheron Constantin logo. Circling around the dial between the rail-road motif minute track and the Arabic numerals is a date-ring, which is pointed out by the central pointer hand. There is a sub-seconds dial at the 6 o’clock position.
