A new chapter is being produced by Vacheron Constantin for their FIFTYSIX® collection and they choose the SIHH 2018 for the unveiling. They consist of three new reinterpreted models made out of various steel and gold options.

These three new models, which reference the historic Vacheron Constantin reference 6073, were originally introduced in 1956, hence the collections designation. We’re talking about iconic pieces that garnered much prestige for the VC brand back in the 1950’s. One of its most defining features were the characteristic lugs, shaped to resemble the Maltese cross branches, used as the company’s emblem.

But, the similarities don’t end there, beside the lugs the box–type crystal rising above the bezel is another vintage-inspired feature. But, Vacheron Constantin has replaced the classic option of a plexi or mineral glass, for the more scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Let’s take a closer look at each individual offering. Also noteworthy is the inclusion of a new polished and satin-brushed 22 carat open-worked rotor, bearing the Maltese Cross applique and frosted-snailed finish, viewable via the exhibition case back, which is a signature feature and present on all these 2018 FIFTYSIX® models.

The watches have a 40mm casing and all the dials are either colored grey on the steel version, or silver-toned on the 18k rose gold versions. But, these sector-dials have more to it than just: grey or silver. Their chapter ring is composed of an alternating mixture of Arabic numerals and baton-type hour index markers. While on the surface there are two noticeable subtle tones, which is achieved by finishing effects that attribute this collection with an elegant touch. The culmination of these enhancing details really attribute them of that 1950’s mystique they were conceived to recall.

Focusing on each individual model, first up there’s the simplest self-winding option with the aforementioned sector-dial options and a rail-road motif minute index ring circling near the bezel, plus another minute-ring toward the inner center of the dial. Equipped with sword-style hands that are fitted with a luminescent coating, just like the minute index markers for an enhanced legibility. There is also a date aperture at the 3 o’clock position.
