As a means to highlight much of their technical achievements and aesthetic heritage Vacheron Constantin created the “Historiques” collection. They’ve now been producing these reinterpretations of contemporary timepieces for 20 years. As one more is added; introducing the “Vacheron Constantin American 1921 small model”.
This model in question was specifically conceived for the American markets, way back in the 1920’s. At the time there was a high interest in the avant-garde cushion shaped design, presented on this Vacheron Constantin. No doubt the horology market was already supplied with square and other forms of cases besides round. But this watch undoubtedly managed to stand-out especially for how the time was displayed on it.
The new smaller cushion style case comes in at 36.5mm and is made out of 18k rose gold with a transparent case back that allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement. It was previously already available in a 40mm version made of yellow gold (Ref#: 82035/000J-9964) and 18k rose gold (Ref#: 82035/000R-9359), which explains its marketing launch highlighting the “smaller” offering this time around. We also reviewed a 40mm version made out of platinum (Ref#: 82035/000P-B168) when Vacheron Constantin released three new pieces for their “Historiques” collection, which you can read about here.
Its cushion case although in a smaller diameter faithfully mimics its larger version. It comes equipped with an off-centered ball-shaped crown and slim slightly tilted lugs that provide for a comfortable wrist fit. Smoothed out edges for an elegant and discreet presence, although still emanating a classic demeanor. All topped off by a lightly domed sapphire crystal that assists with keeping this watch water-resistant up to 30 meters (98 feet).
Time is exhibited on a finely grained silver-toned dial with black painted Arabic numerals, followed by a railroad track motif series of black minute index markers, circling around the dial in a squared case. It’s quite a unique dial since it features a diagonal display, which was achieved by rotating the interior movement by a 45-degree counter-clockwise rotation. This inclination allows to steer a car steering wheel, or preform a series of other tasks, without needing to twist the wrist towards yourself.
Quite a simple yet ingenious display that was originally requested by an American client, who happened to be very passionate about cars and was seeking a watch that could allow to never lose track of the road. Leading to a diagonal read-off, which was rather “groundbreaking” and truly innovating for the 1920’s. Equipped with slender open-tipped hands made of black oxidized 18k gold and also includes a baton-shaped second’s counter. There is a sub-seconds dial between the 2 and 4 o‘clock.
