Another brand reaching the shoreline is Ulysse Nardin, as they announce the release of three new models of their “Marine Chronometers” watch. These timepieces are also glimpses of some of the novelties they will be showcasing at the upcoming SIHH 2018.
First up there’s two new versions of the “Classico Manufacture Grande Feu”. Both of the come in a 40mm case made out of stainless-steel with a transparent case back, which allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement. Topped by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, which also assists with water-resistance on these watches reaching up to 30 meters (96 feet).
Time is exhibited on either a: black or white enamel dial with Roman numerals, followed by a railroad track motif minute ring circling around near the bezel. There is also a sub-seconds dial at the 6 o’clock position with a round date aperture in its midst. But, the highlight of this timepiece really resides in the enamel dial that was crafted at Donzé Cadrans, which are a specialist luxury watch dial enameller. Donzé Cadrans was founded in 1972 by Master Enameller: Francis Donzé, in Le Locle, Switzerland.

Next up we have the “Ulysse Nardin Marine Tourbillon Blue Grand Feu” in a 43mm stainless-steel case, while mounted to the case is a steel fluted bezel attributing this piece with a more distinct outdoorsy look. Equipped with a crown covered by blue rubber for a firmer grip, while also protected by crown guards protruding from the side of the case. Water-resistance on the watch can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on a blue enamel guilloché dial with Roman numerals, followed by a railroad track minute ring, circling around the dial. There is a power reserve sub-dial indicator under the 12 o’clock position, with the French terms “BAS” for low, and “HAUT” for high, written in red to contrast with the blue background. Its 60-second flying tourbillon escapement, can be seen at the 6 o’clock position.
Ulysse Nardin Marine Tourbillon Blue Grand Feu
This “Ulysse Nardin Marine Tourbillon Blue Grand Feu” (Ref#: NA) is powered by a self-winding mechanical movement, caliber UN-128 with 36 jewels and 28,800 vph. Power reserve on this watch can last up to 60 hours, when fully wound. Mounted to the watch is a blue alligator strap, secured to the wrist by a stainless-steel folding clasp. Maybe a rubber strap would have been a better option to reinforce its marine theme. But, even though it was a water-resistance capable of diving, the tourbillon can be fragile. Still it’s a gorgeous timepiece with a borderline eclectic appeal, between being a sports watch or a dress watch.
MSRP: $28,000.00 USD
Finally we focus on the “Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpilleur Military” watch comes in a 44mm stainless-steel case with a solid case back featuring the engraving of “two ships at sea” that are “Torpilleur” boats, which is the French term for “destroyer”. These boats were warships used in both of the World Wars. Also has an inscription that read “Limited Edition” and name of the model on its case back. Equipped with a military style crown that features the “UN” log o with an anchor. Water resistance on this watch can reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).
Time is exhibited on either a: black dial with yellow Arabic numerals, or a white dial with black outlined Arabic numerals. Both have a railroad track motif ring with larger square hour index markers, circling around the dial. Plus a sub-seconds dial can be seen at the 6 o’clock position, cutting into the Arabic numeral “6” itself. The central hands and hour index markers have undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
