TAG Heuer had previously announced they would be releasing five exclusive watches during 2019, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their iconic “Monaco” collection. This latest release, which is the second installment in the series comes in a very exclusive limited edition run, with an eye fetching red colored dial.
Besides the aforementioned anniversary, TAG Heuer has aimed at celebrating the 1980’s with this particular timepiece. An era in which some of the greatest racing teams were flashing red and the world was witnessing the rise of a brilliant young Brazilian pilot called, Ayrton Senna; when we were unbeknownst of the tragic fate he would encounter in 1994.
This 50h anniversary has already bene underway since the New Year began. We had previously also reviewed the “TAG Heuer Gulf Oil Special Edition” (Ref#: CAW211R.FC6401), which you can read more about here. Besides these special editions and the ones yet to come, we’d like to remind you that the Monaco is available in a wide array of different colored dials, still in current production.
As we focus on this latest release it comes in a 39mm case made of stainless-steel with a fixed-bezel and a solid screwed-on case back. Engraved on this flipside are: technical details, the original “MONACO HEUER” logo, but instead of the unique individual number for each of these limited edition timepieces, they opted to inscribe “ONE OF 169”.
TAG Heuer also added the inscription “1979-1989 SPECIAL EDITION” and “SWISS MADE SINCE 1860” on the case back, hinting at a wider history for this watch that can be further explored on an interactive timeline you can visualize on their website here.
There are two steel alternate shaped push-buttons on the right-side of the case to operate the chronograph functions, while the polished setting-crown is on the opposite side of the case. Topped by a domed and beveled scratch-resistant sapphire crystal that assists with water-resistance on this watch being capable of reaching up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on a vibrant red dial with sunray finishing. Circling around round hour index markers, followed by smaller minute index markers circling the square dial, on a flange ring of white printed numerals. There are two silver sub-dials: a sub-seconds at the 3 o’clock position and a 30-minute counter at the 9 o’clock position.
The central rhodium plated hands have been give black tips, matching the small black markings linked to the facetted hour index markers. Both these hands and the hour index markers have undergone a white luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a white date aperture located at the 6 o’clock position. Above and aligned with this date is the inscription “Swiss Made”, followed by “AUTOMATIC CHRONOGRAPH”, while the upper-half of the dial showcases the vintage “MONACO HEUER” logo in white print.
