During the course of this year we followed along as TAG Heuer celebrated the 50 years of one of its most iconic models, the “Monaco”. Now after spanning several decades this half-century celebration has finally caught up with current times. Let’s take a look at the new “TAG Heuer Monaco Calibre 11 ‘2009-2019’ Special Edition”.
The 39mm case made of stainless-steel in the iconic square shape with a sandblasted finish. On the flip-side we encounter a solid steel case back, which has been engraved with “2009-2019 Special Edition” and the indications of its limited run “One of 169”.
It comes equipped with its standard two steel alternate shaped push-buttons on the right-side of the case to operate the chronograph functions, while the polished setting-crown is on the opposite side of the case. All topped by a domed and beveled scratch-resistant sapphire crystal that assists with water-resistance on this watch being capable of reaching up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on a vibrant charcoal black dial with “stealth” like finish. Circling around its mid-center are round grey-toned hour index markers, followed by smaller minute index markers circling with the square dial perimeter. Outside of these markings are longer rectangular shaped hour markers, aligned with the dotted indexes.
There are two silver sub-dials: a sub-seconds at the 3 o’clock position and a 30-minute counter at the 9 o’clock position. These sub-dials have been give red hands, just as the central chronograph hand, adding an extra vibrant tone to this overall subdued color-scheme.
The central black gold plated hands and the hour index markers have undergone a white luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a black date aperture located at the 6 o’clock position. Above and aligned with this date is the inscription “Swiss Made”, followed by “AUTOMATIC CHRONOGRAPH”, while the upper-half of the dial showcases the vintage “MONACO HEUER” logo in white print.
