TAG Heuer had previously announced they would be releasing five exclusive watches during 2019, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their iconic “Monaco” collection. This latest release, which is the third installment in the series comes in an equally exclusive limited edition run, with a textured grey colored dial.

After celebrating the 1980’s with the “TAG Heuer Monaco Calibre 11 50th Anniversary 1980’s Special Edition” (Ref#: CAW211W.FC6467), which you can refresh your memory about here.

Now we celebrate the 1990’s decade that was characterized by industrial design and street-style fashion. An era that was marked by artwork that adapted to an urban “jungle” landscape, makes sense to be crafted and given a color-scheme that reminds us of those concrete toned surroundings.

TAG Heuer also added the inscription “1989-1999 SPECIAL EDITION” and “SWISS MADE SINCE 1860” on the case back, hinting at the wider history for this watch that can be further explored on an interactive timeline you can visualize on their website here.

The third and latest release of what will be a series of five installments comes in a 39mm square case made of stainless-steel with a fixed-bezel and a solid screwed-on case back. Engraved on this flip-side are: technical details, the original “MONACO HEUER” logo, but instead of the unique individual number for each of these limited edition timepieces, they opted to inscribe “ONE OF 169”.

There are two steel alternate shaped push-buttons on the right-side of the case to operate the chronograph functions. The polished setting-crown is placed on the left-side of the case, matching the same placement found on its original 1969 release. Topped by a domed and beveled scratch-resistant sapphire crystal that assists with water-resistance on this watch being capable of reaching up to 100 meters (330 feet).

Time is exhibited on a predominantly grey and grained rhodium-plated dial with some blue and red highlights. What makes this dial unique is its grainy and textured finish, which we believe is the first time a Monaco has been given such a treatment.

This square dial features a ring of blue printed minute index markers with larger red markings for every 5-minute increment, which also double as hour index markers. There are two blue framed silver sub-dials with a sand-blast finish that make them contrast from the background: a sub-seconds at the 3 o’clock position and a 30-minute counter at the 9 o’clock position. A red inner square has been outlined towards the center of the dial

The central rhodium plated hands have been give red tips, matching the small red markings linked to the faceted hour index markers. Both these hands and the hour index markers have undergone a white luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a date aperture located at the 6 o’clock position. Above and aligned with this date is the inscription “SWISS MADE”, followed by “AUTOMATIC CHRONOGRAPH”, while the upper-half of the dial showcases the vintage “MONACO HEUER” logo in blue print. A subtle detail that distinguishes this piece from the previous installment is the use of a sans-serif font for the “MONACO” wording.
