TAG Heuer is celebrating the life of Muhammad Ali at the Gleason Gym, in Brooklyn, where the deceased champion used to train. As a tribute TAG Heuer is issuing two versions of their “Carrera Calibre 5 Ring Master”, a regular steel version and a one-of-a-kind gold model.

This watch model sought out inspiration from the 1950’s Heuer stopwatch that came equipped with interchangeable rings on the edge of the dial. These rings were graduated for various time intervals to record elapsed time in sport, or other activities. There was even a version of the ‘Ring-Master’ equipped with a boxing scale, which could track the rounds of a boxing match. That feature has been replicated in this Muhammad Ali limited edition timepiece.

Also involved in the festivities is the Muhammad Ali Centre, which will benefit from auctioning off the gold model of this watch. While back in October there was a charity event held at the famous Gleason’s Gym in Dumbo, Brooklyn where Muhammad Ali trained. It was hosted by TAG Heuer and Muhammad Ali Enterprises, but all the proceeds also went to the Muhammad Ali Center.

The 43mm case is made of stainless steel, except for the one-of-a-kind-piece being auctioned, which is made of 18k rose gold.

The caseback on both versions features an engraving of Muhammed Ali in fighting stance; his signature and an inscription reading “Tribute To Muhammad Ali”.

There are twin boxing scales on the perimeter of the dial, which are rotatable via the crown at the 11 o‘clock position. The bezel indicates 15 three-minute intervals, each separated by a minute; the exact number and duration of heavyweight bouts in Ali’s time; although the rules have changed to 12 three-minute rounds. While the seconds scale shows 15 two-minute bouts, used in other weight divisions. And the inner scale of the dial is for women’s boxing, with two minute rounds shown in white and one minute breaks in between.

Time is exhibited on a black dial with white Arabic numerals. In order to match the original stopwatch this watch was inspired on, it has five minute numerals instead of hour markers. There also a date aperture at the 6 o’clock position and slightly above it we can see Ali’s signature. The red rectangles with Arabic numerals circling around on the outer most ring, near the bezel, offer a third lively color to this palette scheme.
