Typically anniversaries are celebrated on round decade long markers. So 55 years wouldn’t typically call for a celebration, but that hasn’t been an impediment for TAG Heuer to do so. Fans of the brand can rejoice for a new “TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 Chronograph” is here.
The “Carrera” collection is hands down one of the best-selling, if not thee bestseller watch in their catalog. To celebrate the heritage associated with this timepiece TAG Heuer has added hint’s of red to this new release to recall the collections attachment to motor-sports, as well as three white counters. A design originally inspired by the 1970’s when the rise of motor racing began requiring readable timing.
The 41mm case is made of stainless-steel with a solid case back, which has engravings reading: “SWISS MADE SINCE 1860”, “SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL”, “100 METERS” and in the riveted central area their logos for “TAG HEUER” and “CARRERA”. This a core way in which this new release differs from former releases, which had been equipped with sapphire exhibition case backs, for the last couple of years.
Mounted to the case is a stainless-steel bezel with a blue or black coating depending on the different available versions, featuring an engraved tachymeter scale in white lettering and Arabic numerals. It also comes equipped with two push-pieces that activate the chronograph functions with a setting-crown in-between them.
The starting push-piece for the chronograph activation has been given a red marking, while the setting-crown is riveted for a firmer grip and has a black marking. All topped by a sapphire crystal that assists with water-resistance on this watch being able to reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on either a black or blue dial with stainless-steel applied hour index markers, followed by white printed minute index markers. There are three contrasting white sub-dials: a 12-hour counter at the 6 o’clock position; a sub-seconds at the 9 o’clock position and a 30-minute counter at the 12 o’clock position.
The central stainless-steel hands and the hour index markers have all been fitted with a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. It comes with a red central chronograph hand activated by the push-pieces. Plus other red highlights can be seen on the sub-dial hands and in the form of small triangular index markers for every 5-minute increment of the tachymeter scale, on the flange. There is also a date aperture at the 3 o’clock position beside the TAG HEUER logo and in-between the “CARRERA” & “CALIBRE 16” inscriptions in white print.
