Earlier this year Tag Heuer held an online competition on their website between their fans and horology enthusiasts, to decide which classic “Autavia” dial would be brought back into circulation. So, it was announced at Baselworld 2016 that they would choose 16 vintage Heuer’s, call the event the “Autavia Cup” and allow people to vote over the internet. The winner would serve as inspiration for the new generation Autavia, as it did after tallying over 50,000 votes worldwide. The chosen victor was the: “1966 Autavia” (Ref#: 2446 Mark 3), which originally debuted with a price tag of $119.50, back in 1966.
It was quite a successful and interesting marketing approach. Quite well thought out by placing the most compelling models in separate enough brackets, so the most popular models wouldn’t eliminate each other early on, as the knock-off rounds ran their course. And the whole “Autavia Cup” competition served to entertain, create public awareness and emotional investment by those who voted or just followed along.
Now, Tag Heuer continues its Autavia resurrection with the new “Jack Heuer Special Edition”. While the contest winner “TAG Heuer Heritage Caliber Heuer 02” also known as the “2017 Autavia” (inspired by the “1966 Autavia” Ref#: 2446 Mark 3) exhibited an inverted panda-dial; the new ”Jack Heuer 85th Birthday Edition” has a proper panda-dial.
Other differences are the applied bi-polarizing faux-patina lume for that extra vintage look, which the newer model has also opted out of for a simple white lume. And ultimately the “Jack Heuer Edition” has swapped the Rindt-inspired 12-hour hour bezel; for a minutes/hours (MH) bezel with both 12-hour markings and an elapsed time scale
The 42mm case is made of stainless-steel with a solid case back, which features a commemorative engraving that reads ”Jack Heuer 85th Birthday Edition” plus his signature. Mounted to the case is an aluminum bezel with a black insert and aforementioned minutes/hours (MH) with both 12-hour markings and an elapsed time scale. Water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on a silver sunray finish dial with stainless-steel applied hour index markers, followed by smaller black minute index markers. Although its silver instead of white, it can and is being referred to as a “panda dial”. There are three black sub-dials: a 30-minute counter at the 3 o’clock position; a sub-seconds at the 6 o’clock position; and finally 12-hour counter at the 9 o’clock position. The hands and hour index markers have all under gone a white luminescent coating, for an enhance legibility.
