Damascus steel has fascinated humankind for many centuries, as a metal renowned for its distinctive patterns of banding and mottling reminiscent of flowing water. Now the haute horlogerie market has the opportunity to acquire this exquisite alloy in the form of a functional timepiece, thanks to Sinn producing the new limited edition “Sinn 1800 DAMASZENER”.
Back in 2016 Sinn released the “1800 S DAMASZENER” which was their first foray with Damascus steel, although it was made with a black hard coating, in a limited each of only 100 manufactured pieces. Now they have followed up with a genuine uncolored block of Damascus steel.
The one-piece dial and central part of the case has been forged from a complete steel block, rather than designed as separate components, as usually timepieces tend to be. The end result is quite unique as the Damascus pattern seen on the dial can be seen across the entire case.
It manages to create a fascinating and impressive whole. Sinn has also applied its patented TEGIMENT technology to the steel, which contributes to making this case particularly scratch-resistant to preserve its intrinsic colors and patterns.
The 43mm case and screw-fastened case back are made of genuine forge-welded Damascus steel, which is a combination of high-grade stainless steel sourced from India and Sri Lanka. Making Damascus steel is a very elaborate process that represents a unique combination of craftsmanship and application. During its production different types of steel are layered and forge-welded together. After being forged it is halved while in a glowing state and layered together again.
It also comes equipped with a screw-down crown that continues the Damascus steel theme and has been embossed with the Sinn “S” logo. All topped by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating on both sides, which assists with water-resistance on this watch being able to reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on a dial made of Damascus steel as a result of the aforementioned single complete steel block, with thirteen meticulously applied hour index markers, one for each hour and two markers at the 12 o’clock position.
There is also a date aperture at the 6 o’clock position. The central stainless-steel and the hour appliqué hour index markers have all undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
Other than these minimal and essential components the dial is left uncluttered. The main point of Sinn crafting a watch out of a single block of Damascus steel was to highlight and emphasis the natural beauty of this metal alloy. And that is exactly what we get in this unique and compact Sinn watch.
