Rolex has released an updated “Yacht-Master” at Baselworld 2019, now available in 18k white gold for the first time. The case size has also grown from 40 to 42mm and now houses the new Rolex caliber 3235 movement. Let’s take a closer look at the new “Rolex Yacht-Master 42” reference 226659.
The “Yacht-Master” model was first introduced to the Rolex line-up in 1992, which it not that long ago compared too many of their other successful models. Unlike the “Submariner” or “Sea-Dweller” this timepiece was always intended to be used more as a lifestyle piece, instead of a tool watch. I guess one can decipher that from their titles: “Submariner” and “Sea-Dweller” both imply active underwater activities; while cruising on a “yacht” or being referred to as a “master” implies a more luxurious status.
Back in Baselworld 2016 Rolex released the first “Yacht-Master” made with their patented “everose” (Ref#: 116622), as well as a “Rolesium” version. These models are still current production pieces and preserve the initial look intended for this model line, as you can see and read more about here.
But, we need to go back to 2015 and take a look at the “Rolex Yacht-Master” (Ref#: 116655) to find a piece with similitude to Rolex’s new option. This was the first model to feature the so-called “Oysterflex” bracelet, which is actually a strap made of rubber reinforced with some alloy elements. It was also made available in a 37mm and 40mm option, which are both still currently in stock at EiT via this link.
For this 2019 edition Rolex has given it a larger 42mm case made out of 18k white gold, which as aforementioned makes it the first “Yacht-Master” to feature white-gold. The case also has a solid case back and a middle case portion with a polished finish. Mounted to the watch is a bi-directional rotatable bezel with a 60-minute graduated Cerachrom insert in matt black ceramic, featuring raised graduation markers and Arabic numerals with a polished finish.
It also comes equipped with a white-gold winding crown fitted with a Triplock triple waterproof system, which is found between a pair of crown-guards that are an integral part of the middle case. All topped by a sapphire crystal that also assists with water-resistance on this watch reaching up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on a black lacquered dial with 18k white gold applied hour index markers in round, rectangular and a triangular shape at the 12 o’clock position. Circling the dial are also small white printed minute index markers. The overall grey and black hues attribute this watch with a monochromatic look.
There is also a date aperture at the 3 o’clock position that is magnified by a cyclops lens hovering over it on the sapphire crystal. The central 18k white hands and hour index markers have all been fitted with a Chromalight luminescence, for an enhanced legibility.
Rolex Yacht Master 42
This “Rolex Yacht Master 42” (Ref#: 226659) is powered by a self-winding mechanical movement, caliber 3235 with 31 jewels and 28,800 vph. It comes equipped with a paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring and paraflex shock absorbers held in place by a traversing bridge that reinforces the shock resistance. Power reserve on this watch can last up to 70 hours, when fully wound.
Mounted to the watch is the aforementioned Oysterflex bracelet made of flexible metal blades overmoulded with high-performance elastomer, while secured to the wrist by an
Oysterlock folding safety clasp in 18k white gold with a Rolex Glidelock extension system, which is attached to the strap by a flexible titanium and nickel alloy metal blade.
