In recent years Rolex has been getting creative with one of their most celebrated model lines, the “Sea-Dweller”. It began with enlarging the case from 40mm to 43mm, swapping movements and even adding a cyclops lens among other subtle and not so unsubtle modifications. Now for the first time ever Rolex has released a “Sea-Dweller” with some yellow gold, on the new two-tone reference 126603 edition, unveiled at Baselworld 2019.
Back in Baselworld 2017 the Sea-Dweller celebrated its 50th Anniversary (Ref#: 126600) with a re-designed case, housing a new movement, using writing for the logo and by including a cyclops lens for the first time; as you can see here.
While last year at Baselworld 2018, Rolex returned with an updated “Deepsea” Sea-Dweller (Ref#: 126660) that also enlarged its 40mm case to a 44mm diameter. Rolex also finally addressed some frequent consumer concerns by providing a broader bracelet and resized Oysterlock; which you can read more about here. Just like the previous aforementioned 50th anniversary edition this new 2019 update also comes in a 43mm case. But, the true novelty was Rolex making the case out of stainless-steel (Oystersteel) and 18k yellow gold (yellow Roleser) for the first time ever.
Mounted to the case is an 18k yellow gold monobloc unidirectional bezel with a 60-minute graduated Cerachrom insert in black ceramic that features moulded, recessed numerals and graduations. It also includes a steel satin finished middle case with polished sides and a screw-in setting crown. Water-resistance on this watch can reach the very impressive 1,220 meters (4000 feet), with assistance from the helium escape valve placed on the opposite end in relation to the crown.
Time is exhibited on a black glossy dial with 18k gold round hour index markers and standard stick minute index markers circling the dial. Its central hours, minutes hands are also made out of 18k yellow gold.
As Rolex introduces new color schemes to their Sea-Dweller model line, it also breaks away from the classic white lettering. Instead opting for more eye fetching color coordinated hues, with the yellow-gold colored “Sea-Dweller” designation, located above the 6 o’clock position; which is reminiscent of the red writing approach found on their 50th anniversary edition.
Another nuance that wasn’t a complete crowd-pleaser, but still appears on this 2019 update was the inclusion of the magnifying cyclops lens at the 3 o’clock position. The 18k gold central and hands and hour index markers are filled with a blue Chromalight lume, for an enhanced legibility.
