This is Patek Philippe’s way of adding a new level-entry sports model in its collections. A much needed timepiece ever since the “Nautilus” has become ever more out of the budget-friendly bracket for many horology enthusiasts. This is Patek’s first “Aquanaut” equipped with a chronograph function, which now makes it a much more viable and desirable watch, for the majority of consumers. And it even comes equipped with the same caliber movement that could be found in the “Nautilus” 5980 model.
So, what we have her is an “Aquanaut” that provides travel time, a time/date and also a self-winding chronograph. It is a flyback chronograph movement with a classic column wheel and vertical disk clutch that prevents a rebound of the hand in either direction whenever the chronograph is engaged. And since the clutch is virtually friction-free the chronograph hand can also be used as a continuously running second’s hand.
The 42.2mm case is made of stainless-steel with a transparent case back, which allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement. Equipped with two push-pieces to activate the chronograph functions with a setting-crown that has the Patek Philippe logo engraved on it, in between them. Topped by a sapphire crystal that assists with water-resistance on this watch being able to reach up to 120 meters (393 feet).
This is a bigger case than what we find on than previous “Aquanaut” (Ref#: 5167R-001) which only measured 40mm and we currently have in stock as you can see here. Or the “Aquanaut” (Ref#: 5164R) which is closer at a 41mm as you can see in this stainless-steel model or an 18k rose gold edition. But, if you’re looking for a different type of “Aquanaut” with the same case size check out our blue dial (Ref#: 5168G-001) listed here.
Time is exhibited on a grey classic embossed pattern style dial with white Arabic numerals. Circling around the dial nearing the bezel are also: thick white index markers, followed by smaller white minute index markers and in-between those are even smaller orange second index markers.
There is a sub-seconds sub-dial at the 6 o’clock position with white Arabic numerals and a predominant array of orange second’s index markers, plus an orange hand steadily ticking about. A white date aperture with black numerals can also be seen at the 3 o’clock position.
These orange highlights as index markers and the sub-hand dial, as well as the central chronograph hand really do liven up the predominantly grey colored dial. The central stainless-steel hands and hour index markers were also given a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
