It’s not the first time we’ve seen these star-lit watches being crafted by Parmigiani Fleurier. But, for 2018 they are back with yet two now offerings that showcase these aventurine glass painted dials. Introducing the “Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda 1950 Galaxy” and the “Parmigiani Fleurier Métropolitaine Galaxy”.
Inspiration can strike at any moment and can come from many places. But, we’re pretty sure this Parmigiani Fleurier release got its vision for the enchanting “aventurine glass” dials from their Val-de-Travers district, in Switzerland. It seems that in this picturesque landscape there is almost no light polluting the night sky, which allows for a non-obstructed view of the millions of stars that hover over there. Many of which the artisans at Parmigiani Fleurier have masterfully designed on to these magical looking watches.
First up lets take a look at the “Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda 1950 Galaxy. The 39mm case is made of 18k rose gold with a polished finish and a transparent sapphire exhibition case back that allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement. The inscription “EDITION SPECIALE” plus the unique individual number for each of these limited edition pieces can be seen engraved on the case back.
Mounted to the case is an 18k rose gold bezel with 84 encrusted diamonds attached to it, with a total .646 carat weight. The setting-crown has a milky-white opal stone attached to its end. Topped by a sapphire crystal that assists with keeping this watch water-resistant up to 30 meters (96 feet).
Time is exhibited on a blue aventurine glass dial with 18k rose gold applied hour index markers. The dial we find here is practically identical to others issued before in the Parmigiani Fleurier catalogue, like on the “Tonda 1950” model which we reviewed here awhile back.
The central skeleton delta-shaped hands are crafted of 18k rose gold with a luminescent filling, for an enhance legibility. These unique dials are made possible by a technique that requires dropping sprinkles of a hybrid cooper and glass material known as “aventurine”, on to a midnight blue background previously laid, creating a “star-lit” sky effect. Creating quite an alluring effect with a poetic and serene feel to it, which never ceases to attract a gaze.
