At this year’s SIHH 2019 we got to see a several redesigned “Submersible” models by Officine Panerai. Among them were these two military themed watches crafted out of their Carbotech material: “Submersible Marina Militaire Carbotech.”
These new offerings have been bestowed with the “Marina Militare” label, as a historical reference to the brands relationship to the Navy Special Forces in their homeland of Italy. “COMSUBIN” which is an acronym for “Comando Reaggruppament Subacquei e Incursori Teseo Tesei” are the Italian Navy Special Forces.
The 47mm cases on both of these watches are made of the aforementioned carbontech. This carbon composite is produced with thin sheets of carbon fibers compressed at high pressure with a high-end polymer (PEEK), which binds the composite material enhancing its strengthen and durability. The whole case is permeated with a distinct unique striped pattern due to the layered carbon fiber sheet.
On the flipside the screw-on case back of these watch diverge. The PAM 979 model has been engraved with a pilot and the inscription “SURVIVAL INSTRUMENTS”;
while the PAM 961 has been engraved with the aforementioned “COMSUBIN” logo.
Mounted to the watch is a rotating bezel with small minute markers matching the color scheme of each version (white or green), followed by Arabic numerals for every 15-minute increment. The initial large dotted markers at the 12 o’clock position has also been given a luminescent filling. These cases also feature the iconic Panerai crown guard and safety lever, while water-resistance on these watches can reach up to 300 meters (984 feet). Unlike previous models these Submersibles have dials made of carbon. So, time is exhibited on a camouflage black carbon dial with round dotted hour index markers. A sub-seconds dial has been placed at the 9 o’clock position. Both models also include a white inscription with the brands name on the upper-half of the dial and “MARINA MILITARE” on the lower-half.
There is also a date aperture at the 3 o’clock position. The central hands, sub-seconds and hour index markers have all been given a luminescent filling for an enhanced legibility.
Panerai has also swapped the faux vintage luminescence on these models for green and blue hues. Another differentiating factors are that the hands, sub-seconds and hour index markers have been color white for the PAM 979, while the PAM 961 has been colored green.
