Officine Panerai has released a new version of their Submersible model line, mid-way thru the summer season. After a series of military-green dialed watches, a overall monochromatic edition, among other memorable releases; this time around the novelty is based on a proprietary alloy. Let’s take a closer look at the “Officine Panerai Submersible Goldtech™ PAM 974”.

Despite this being part of the “Submersible” model line this watch lacks some standard diver’s features, such as a “Helium Escape Valve”. Thus this model is worthy of the sometimes joking term “desk diver” moniker. But, what it may lack of water profundity is made up for by a very durable case construction worthy of military-grade diving equipment.

Besides its most observable quality that stems from the uniqueness of this proprietary alloy Goldtech™, which consists of gold mixed with a percentage of copper that imbues the material with a rich and subtle red hue. It also contains platinum, which attributes the material with the capacity to prevent oxidizing and expanding its overall lifetime. In terms of looks the end result is a mid-way between the traditional yellow and rose gold tones.

The 42mm case is made of the aforementioned Goldtech™ with a polished finish, while on the flip-side we encounter a see-through sapphire crystal exhibition case back, which allows to view the inner works of the mechanical movement. Mounted to the case is a Goldtech™ anti-clockwise rotating bezel with a graduated scale.

It also come equipped with Panerai’s iconic crown protector with the with movable latch lock. The wide and stubby lugs also give more room for this proprietary alloy to shine, while also providing a comfortable wrist fit. All topped by a sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, which also assists with water-resistance on this watch reaching up to 100 meters (330 feet).

Time is exhibited on a predominantly black dial with dotted hour index markers and rectangular round edged hour index markers for the 6 and 12 o’clock positions. There is a sub-seconds at the 9 o’clock position and a date aperture at the 3 o’clock position.

On the dial both the the word “SUBMERSIBLE” on the upper-half, as well as “100m/333ft” have been inscribed in a goldtech tone matching the cases hue. Both the hour and minute hands, each 15-second marker of the sub-seconds, plus all the hour index markers have been fitted with a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
