It was back in 2011 that we saw Panerai release their first ever timepiece made out of bronze, but since then they have released a few follow-ups crafted out of this alloy. Now for 2019 the “Laboratorio di Idee” division of Panerai has released the new “Panerai Submersible Bronzo PAM 968”.

As aforementioned there have been a couple of bronze watches issued by Panerai since 2011. Among those releases was the “Panerai Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Bronzo” (Ref#: PAM 671) that debuted back in 2017 at SIHH. This prior release also had a 47mm case and is quite similar to the 2019 model, except for the blue colored dial, as you can see and read more about here. It is also currently in stock at EiT as can be seen on this listing here.

As always one of the main attractions about bronze watches is linked to their gaining patina with age. As the years pile on a green or brown film begins to appear on the surface of certain metals, like bronze due to oxidation. This phenomenon keeps developing with time and attributes each timepiece with their own unforeseeable uniqueness, which can be an endearing process for some watch bearers.
Now moving into 2019 the lasted “Bronzo” comes in a 47mm case made of bronze with a screwed on titanium and partially transparent case back that allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement.
Mounted to the case is a unidirectional bronze anti-clockwise rotating bezel with a graduated scale engraved to it on an applied brown sandblasted ceramic disc, featuring Arabic numerals for every 15-minute increment.
It also includes the trademark Panerai crown protector, made out of brushed bronze. Topped off by an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, which also assists with water-resistance on the timepiece being able to reach up to 300 meters (1000 feet).
Time is exhibited on a brown dial with dotted hour index markers and rectangular round edged hour index markers for the 6 and 12 o’clock positions. There is a sub-seconds at the 9 o’clock position and a date aperture at the 3 o’clock position.
Both the hour and minute hands, each 15-second marker of the sub-seconds, plus all the hour index markers have been fitted with a green luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
