Officine Panerai returns to the market with their first ever fully monochromatic look in the form of two new “Luminor Marina” models. Despite the two offerings they don’t leave room for much hesitation on the consumer’s part, since they only differ in terms of size: 42 or 44mm ate the option. The true novelty resides in their subdued yet appealing color-scheme, so let’s take a look.
Although these are “diver” watches, truth be told most of these timepieces never get to experience a deeper dive beyond their owners home sinks. But despite these facts Officine Panerai has provided a water resistance of 100 meters for the smaller diameter version; while the more adventurous can go for the 44mm option with a true “diver capability” of 300 meters, worthy of their Italian Navy heritage.
These watches are basically identical even carrying the same mechanical movement. They only differ in their sizing options: the PAM 977 comes in a 42mm stainless-steel case, while the PAM 978 is available in a slightly bigger option of 44mm. Both have been crafted out of stainless-steel, more specifically AISI 316L steel.
On the flip-side both these timepieces feature a screw-on transparent sapphire exhibition case back, which allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement.
It comes equipped with the patented Panerai lever-operated crown guard that protects the setting-crown where we can wind it up and get this timepieces gears turning.
As aforementioned water-resistance on these watches vary with the PAM00977 capable of reaching up to about 100 meters (330 feet) and the PAM00978 capable of withstanding up to three times that capacity at 300 meters (984 feet).
Time is exhibited on a silvered colored dial with brushed and vertical lines. The pairing of this color tone and finishing technique are a true novelty on this Panerai model line, despite their apparent “discreetness”. They feature luminous white hour index markers and the Arabic numerals: 6, 9 and 12.
It includes a sub-seconds dial at the 9 o’clock position with black dotted index markings and white pill-shaped marks for every 15-minute increment. The sub-seconds hand has been outlined in blue, which makes it standout and adds an extra color to an overall “silvery-grey” toned dial. There is a matching silver hue date aperture with black numerals at the 3 o’clock position.
The steel applique central hour and minutes hands, as well as the Arabic numerals, hour index markers and sub-seconds hand; have all been fitted with a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. Panerai also managed to apply a slightly different grey tone for the central hands, allowing a minimal but perceivable contrast between the dials elements.
