Once again Officine Panerai returns to market with another watch bearing the name of the grand adventurer Mike Horn. But, this time around they have taken a conscientious and respectful step forward by using recycled material to construct the new “Officine Panerai Mike Horn Edition”.
This is not the first time Officine Panerai has collaborated with Mike Horn to design a timepiece. Back in 2016, we got to see the “Panerai Submersible 1950 3 Days GMT Automatic Titanio” (Ref#: PAM 719) which was conceived to commemorate Mike Horn’s “Pole2Pole” voyage. An endeavor that lead him to venture around the world and cross each of the opposites poles, while aboard his yacht known as “Pangaea”, which is the name of the hypothetical supercontinent that come believed included all current land masses in one solid piece, before they allegedly broke apart during the Triassic and Jurassic Periods.
This new follow-up model comes in a 47mm case made of a brushed Eco-Titanium a newly trademarked and patented alloy by Panerai. As aforementioned this timepiece has been constructed by recycled titanium, which justifies its “Eco” designation for “ecological”.
As news about our oceans being overwhelmed with plastic become ever more alarming, Panerai made noteworthy move. Engraved to the screw-on case back is Mike Horn’s signature and an image of ocean life with rippling water, fish, a whale and a turtle.
It also comes equipped with Panerai’s trademark crown protection. Mounted to the case is a unidirectional rotating bezel with graduated scale, which enables the times of immersion to be calculated, even in dark scenarios thanks to a luminescent marker. All topped by a sapphire crystal that also assists with water-resistance on this watch being able to reach up to 300 meters (984 feet).
Time is exhibited on a sandwich dial in either black with green accents (PAM 984) or blue accents (PAM 985). It is overall a very simple dial, but quite unique in its subtle options. Panerai used rounded dotted hour index markers, except for a single baton marker at 6 o’clock and two side-by-side baton markers at the 12 o’clock position.
It features a sub-seconds counter at the 9 o’clock position. We can see engraved directly to the sapphire crystal the inscription “PANERAI SUBMERSIBLE” on the upper-half of the dial, while the lower-half reads “AUTOMATIC 300m/1000ft”.
The large skeleton central hands, hour index markers and the sub-dial have all be given a green or blue luminescent filling, for an enhanced legibility.
There is also a date aperture at the 3 o’clock position.
