Officine Panerai is already gearing up in preparation for some upcoming 2019 nautical competitions. In honor of the international regatta for classic yachts Panerai is released a special edition of only 150 pieces for their new “Panerai Luminor Regatta Transat Classique”.
In January 2019 a fleet of classic yachts will set sail from Lanzarote and travel 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, on route towards their final destination, St Kitts in the Caribbean Sea. The crews maneuvering these formidable yachts will have to endure through the currents and tides on their way to glory. A truly historic competition that emulate our ancestral navigators that braved to uncover new worlds, relying only on their innate skills and courage. Also competing in the race will be Panerai’s 1936 Bermudan ketch, “Eilean” (which means “little island” in Gaelic) now venturing on into its 38th transatlantic crossing. The 47mm case of made of brushed titanium with a domed screw-on titanium case back is engraved with a “Panerai Transat Classique 2019” logo. Mounted to the case is a contrasting fixed polished titanium bezel. This model features the iconic Panerai protecting guard made of a brushed titanium to contrast with the main case finishing.
The push-piece at the 4 o’clock position underneath the crown-guard stops the orange chronograph minute hand at the intended moment in the relation to the length of the countdown. It also comes equipped with two push-pieces on the left-side of the case that operate the chronograph functions. All topped by a sapphire crystal made of corundum with an anti-reflective coating, which assists with water-resistance on this watch reaching up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on the iconic Panerai sandwich with a blue layer on top and a white layer underneath. It has hour index markers and the Arabic numerals: 6 and 12. There are two sub-dials: a 12-hour counter with an orange hand at the 3 o’clock position; and a sub-seconds with a white hand at the 9 o’clock position.
Keeping with this watches nautical theme Panerai expresses the tachymeter scale in knots. It circles the flange and is synced with the race countdown function, which enables the minutes and seconds preceding the start of a race to be measured. So, when the chronograph is started (via the 4 o’clock push-piece) the relative/chrono hand begins to move, indicating first the minutes and seconds remaining until the start; then once the countdown is completed it holds the time elapsed since the start of the race. The central hands, Arabic numerals and hour index markers have all undergone a luminescent filling, for an enhanced legibility.
