SIHH has officially begun and Officine Panerai is releasing some very unique pieces for this 2017 edition. Among their many new offerings, today we’re focusing on the novelty designated as “Panerai Lab-ID Luminor 1950 Carbotech 3 Days”.

This model was specifically developed by Officine Panerai’s “Laboratorio di Idee”, which dedicates its expertise to compounding all the latest technological and materials available, in their quest to redefine the traditional horology market expectations.

The 49mm case is made of carbotech, which the Panerai brand has used before for their “Luminor Submersible 1950 Carbotech” (Ref#: PAM 616) This material is produced via a production technique based on the integration of carbon fiber elements with polymer parts known as “polyether ether ketone”, which are all put under a specific temperature and pressure to obtain this end result. Its transparent caseback allows to see the inner workings of the mechanical movement and includes a power reserve indicator.

The structure friendly design and hypoallergenic qualities of the carbotech case are very comfortable, due to its lighter weight materials, compared to current ceramic and titanium casings. Panerai’s standard crown and its iconic crown guard are also crafted from carbotech. Water-resistance on this timepiece can reach up to 100m (330 feet).

Time is exhibited on a black sandwich dial covered with “carbon nanotubes” arranged to absorb light and minimize reflection, which results in an extremely dark dial that is debuting itself on the horology industry. Time is indicated with hour index markers and Arabic numerals for the 3, 6, 9 and 12 positions. The hands and all hour markers have undergone a blue luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.

Due to the composite structure of these sandwich designed Panerai dials and their SuperLuminova applied material. No additional process can be properly absorbed, which leads to all the extra symbols in need of integration, to be applied to the sapphire crystal that also features a double-sided anti-reflective coating.

Officine Panerai Lab-ID Luminor 1950 Carbotech 3 Days

This “Officine Panerai Lab-ID Luminor 1950 Carbotech 3 Days” (Ref#: PAM 700) is powered by a hand-wound mechanical movement, caliber P.3001/C with only 4 DLC coated jewels. Power reserve on this timepiece can last up to 72 hours (3 days), when fully wound. But, an impressive detail about this watches movement, is it can work up to 50 years without the need of any service!

Thanks to having various parts made of tantalum-based ceramic alloy, like the: bridges, barrels, main-plate and escapement. Also equipped with wheels made with a DLC (diamond like carbon) coating that keeps friction levels to a minimum, reducing the need for lubrication. Mounted to this timepiece is a black leather strap, with exposed blue stitching matching the dial colors and secured to the wrist via a pre-v black buckle. This watch is a limited edition of only 50 produced pieces.
