For 2016 Panerai fans can rejoice over two new editions, which have been designed to revive a heritage time piece from this brands early glory years. As usual the luxury fair that is SIHH awakens the horology industry to strive for new heights. Be it shocking us with new designs or rehashing what has become hard to find. These two Officine Panerai watches accomplish a bit of both those objectives by introducing the: PAM 662 Radiomir & PAM 663 Luminor.

The “Officine Panerai Radiomir 1940 3 Days Acciaio, Ref#: PAM 662” is a call back to this prestigious watch manufactures origin story. Which requires rewinding time to 1954 when the Egyptian Navy requested a special series of diver’s watches designed for frogmen, dubbed the: Radiomir. It was this moment that originated the “Egiziano Piccolo” reference 6154, of which only approximately 40 pieces were produced and that many collectors have been seeking for ever since. This PAM 662 is a very accurate homage piece right down to its 47mm stainless steel case and that chocolatey dial, with matching strap.

While the “Officine Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days Acciaio”, Ref#: PAM 663” at first glance seems like another homage to the “Egiziano Piccolo”, if you only focus on the dial. The case is also 47mm in diameter and made from stainless steel. But, it’s huge patent locking lever over the crown clearly distinguishes it from the PAM 662 immediately.

And apart from that we begin to focus on the similarities between these two watches. Like their faded dials, which is a way of getting the “new” to look like what the “old originals” now look like. Just like the hands and dial have been filled with ecru colored SuperLuminova material to obtain that vintage semblance. One of the truly modern materials present on these watches is the use of Plexiglass instead of sapphire, for the crystal that’s sits over the dial and also covers its case back .

Both models are powered by the hand-wound mechanical movement, caliber P.3000, with 21 jewels and a power reserve lasting up to 72 hours. Mounted to these time pieces is a brown leather Ponte Vecchio strap with ecru stitching. These are both limited editions with 1000 units produced for each.
