Divers on a budget can rejoice as Oris issues yet another impressive limited edition timepiece, based on their “Aquis” model line of dive watches. This new “Oris Source Of Life” watch serves as a tribute to the extensive Rhine river.
A series of special limited editions have all been developed by Oris as a homage to either: marine conservation; aquatic species and other environmental issues. Previous models we’ve covered include the: “Oris Aquis Small Second Date” another serious divers watch, with an astonishing water resistance of up 500 meters (1640 feet) that you can read more about here.
Or, the “Oris Aquis Clipperton” limited edition that was conceived to shed more light on the French owned Clipperton Island. Found off the west coast of Mexico this island is so remotely located it’s said to have less visitors than the tip of Mount Everest. Yet it is suffering a rapid extinction of its flora and fauna, which you can read more about here.
Just like the “Oris Aquis Hammerhead” which was a limited edition released at Baselworld 2017. Its aim was to support a shark conservation project run by Pelagios Kakunja. Profits from the sales of this timepiece were destined to draw attention towards the endangering future of sharks, which you can gain more insight about here.
The 43.5mm case is made of stainless-steel with a solid case back, which is adorned by an illustration of a map showing the River Rhine, which spurts from the Swiss flowing past Hölstein, near the Oris headquarters. Interesting fact, a feeder brook named Orisbach near their workshop offices is actually where the brand derived its name from.
An engraving of the unique limited edition number of each timepiece and an inscription reading “ORIS SOURCE OF LIFE LIMITED EDITION”, can also be seen on the steel case back.
Mounted to the case is a unidirectional rotating tungsten bezel ring with a matte finish, that assists divers with an optimally legibility with accounting for time lapses.
There are exposed screws on the bezel sides and the crown guards. Its fluted screw-in crown in-between the guards has an embossed Oris logo. Topped by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal that assists with water-resistance on this watch reaching up to 300 meters (984 feet).
Time is exhibited on a predominantly blue dial with some tones of green on a sunray pattern. It has stainless-steel applied hour index markers, followed by smaller white printed minute index markers. The date function is displayed in an inner chapter ring with a small white rotating pointer. This may not provide as much legibility as a date window display, but it does add the dial with more depth and a multi-dimensional look.
The central hands with the Aquis collection style, the thinner seconds hand with a mid-way circle and the hour index markers have all undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
