Once again Oris keeps up the tempo with another timepiece for their jazz-inspired “Culture Collection” of limited edition watches. This time around they are giving homage to the American tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon.

If the name doesn’t ring a bell, maybe some of the many artists he recorded with will, such as: Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, Herbie Hancock, among many others. He was one of the first tenor players to pick up on the bebop style of artists like Charlie Parker, or Bud Powell and adapt the tenor saxophone to it.

He was nicknamed the “Long Tall Dexter” because of his above average height of 6 feet 6 inches (198 cm). And besides his musical fame, he would actually get involved in acting. His role in the 1986 film “Round Midnight” revealed enough talent to garner him a nomination for an Academy Award. He would end up losing to no other than Paul Newman, for his role in “The Color Of Money”. Coincidently an actor renowned for his horology enthusiasm, in particular the “Rolex Daytona” model line, among others.

The 40mm case is made of stainless-steel with a solid steel caseback, which includes a brass colored engraving of “Long Tall Dex”, as well as each models limited edition reference number.

Time is exhibited on a sunray-finished grey dial that has a brown hue, which gorgeously matches up with its brown strap. Hours are represented by stainless-steel applied hour index markers and indicated by nickel hands, for the hours and minutes. There is also a date aperture at the 6 o’clock position.

But, at a closer look this apparently sumptuous yet simple dial reveals small subtle details, similar to the nuances one can hear in jazz improvisation. In the example of this Oris timepiece, the hour index at the 12 o’clock spot is shaped like a saxophone reed, while “Dexter Gordon” is written along the dial, with one minuscule letter per each index marker, which fortunately is spelt with twelve letters. Or, another musical inspired element is the long and thin second’s hands, which is gold-plated like a saxophone. The seconds hand even features an extended counterbalance, as yet another subtle reference to Dexter’s nickname “Long Tall Dex”.
