Starting off the year with a dive towards equality is Oris with their brand new follow up to last year’s successful “Carl Brashear” limited edition watch. This edition will also be a limited piece with a similar dial tone, but comes equipped with a new movement.
For those who didn’t know may this homage timepiece serve as a reminder and create awareness, for one of America’s heroes. Carl Brashear was the U.S. Navy’s first African-American master diver, receiving this distinction and title in 1954, after graduating from the “U.S. Navy Diving and Salvage School”, in Bayonne, New Jersey. Although he faced hostility and racism during his studies, he was resilient and graduated 16 out of 17. Going on to meet and receive a token of recognition from then President Eisenhower.
The previous “Oris Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition” model (Ref#: 01 733 7720 318) was released with a smaller case size at 42mm, equipped with the caliber 733 and had a date aperture. While this new release has a 43mm case is made of bronze with a solid case back that features an engraving of the unique number of each limited edition piece, plus a “scuba diver” in the center, which here is a direct homage to the master diver this watch is named after.
Mounted to the case is a bronze minute scale top ring bezel. Equipped with two bronze push-pieces that operate the chronograph functions and a bronze screw-in security crown in-between them. Topped by a sapphire crystal domed on both sides with an anti-reflective coating, which assists with keeping this watch water-resistance up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on a dark blue dial with hour index and small printed patina colored minute markers, followed by slightly longer marks for every 5-minute increment. Includes two sub-dials: a 30-minute counter at the 3 o’clock position and a sub-seconds at the 9 o’clock position. The central bronze hands and the hour index markers have all been fitted with a luminescent filling, for an enhanced legibility. There is also a date aperture at the 6 o’clock position.
