This watch has been named after the Dewoitine D.26, which was a French designed, Swiss-made propeller plane that was used to train pilots in the Swiss Air Force, back in 1931. The monoplane D.27 fighter aircraft had only 66 models made in total and the D.26 version served as a training aircraft, before progressing to the D.27 model.

Around these aircraft’s was formed a group of volunteer aficionados that became known as “Hanger 31”. These individuals have preserved and regularly flown one of the existing Dewoitine D.26’s, from a base in the Swiss town of Grenchen. It’s thanks to them that this limited edition Oris timepiece has even come into existence.

Although the aircraft was manufactured in 1931 it remained in active service until 1948, at which point it was decommissioned and re-purposed as an apparatus to tow gliders into the air. It would eventually end up being neglected for a long period of time, until it was restored and had its ownership attributed to the “Hanger 31” crew.

But, besides the back story of how this watch got its name, in essence it is a re-interpretation of the original “Oris Big Crown” issued in 1938, which at the time was the first Oris timepiece to use the company’s pointer date complication.

The 40mm case is made of stainless-steel with a solid case back featuring an engraving of the Dewoitine D.26 plane on it, as well as the limited edition number of each individual piece. Mounted to the case is a stainless-steel coin-edge bezel, reminiscent of certain vintage pilot watches. Also comes equipped with an over-size crown, hence the name “Big Crown”.

Time is exhibited on a green hue dial, reminiscent of a cross between the “hunter green” color and the British racing green. It has applied Arabic numerals to tell time, followed by a white railroad motif minute index grid. Afterwards closer to the bezel is a series of Arabic numerals circling the dial as a calendar, which is pointed out by a thin hand with a red tip, adequately highlighting it apart from all the other elements. Its central hands were crafted in a vintage aviator watch style. Plus the central hands and Arabic numerals have all undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
