To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission we were already expecting something memorable and Omega has come out in full shine. They have decided to introduce a new proprietary gold-tone alloy for this “Omega Speedmaster Apollo 11 Limited Edition 50th Anniversary” and give it a manual winding movement.

The original Omega Speedmaster (Ref#: BA145.022) that inspired this new release was first presented at an “Astronauts Appreciation Dinner”, in Houston, on November 25, 1969. Such an event took place to celebrate the success of Apollo 11 during the previous summer. It was a limited edition of only 1,014 pieces, including two offered to President Nixon and Vice President Spiro Agnew. This watch is in production n from 1969 to 1973, with only 975 of the 1,014 pieces being made available to the public.

The original Omega Speedmaster (Ref#: BA145.022) released in 1969.

Just like its predecessor this new Omega release also comes in a solid 18k gold case, but they are introducing a new alloy named “Moonshine” and explained by Omega as “inspired by the shining moon-light dark blue sky. In a paler hue than traditional 18k yellow gold, Moonshine™ gold offers high resistance to the fading of color and luster over time.” It was also an attempt to mimic older vintage gold alloys, which were less bright than current production pieces.

The 42mm case feature a screw-on transparent exhibition case back, which allows to view all the intricacies and embellishments added to this anniversary limited edition movement. The inner decorative ring, also created in 18k Moonshine™ gold has undergone two separate laser ablation processes, plus two PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) color treatments in black and blue.

This ring features a matte-finish blue ocean that surrounds a partial world map of the American continents in a polished finish, which also includes the spaceships historic lift-off site Cape Canaveral (formerly known as Cape Kennedy from 1963 to 1973). A domed lunar meteorite inlay that represents the Moon has also been meticulously set into the cavity of the ring.

Mounted to the case is a burgundy colored bezel that features a tachymeter scale. But, unlike its predecessor this bezel is made of ceramic with a Ceragold technique for the tachymeter scale, which is achieved by filling gold into the ceramic to create the text. Moonshine™ gold.

It comes equipped with two push-pieces to operate the chronograph functions with a setting-crown in-between them. All topped by a sapphire crystal and water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).

Time is also exhibited on a matching Moonshine™ gold dial with solid gold hour index markers that feature a black onyx insert; while circling around in the inner flange are black printed minute index markers. Omega has also tried to keep this dial similar to its original inspiration by including an applied Ω logo and the old vintage font for the “Speedmaster” inscription.

There are three sub-dials: a 30-minute counter at the 3 o’clock position; a 12-hour counter at the 6 o’clock position; and a sub-seconds at the 9 o’clock position. The central hours and minutes hands have been fitted with a black luminous paint, for an enhanced legibility; while the chronograph have only been blackened for aesthetic purposes.
