After various successful iterations of their Luminor model, Officine Panerai has just released a grand candidate for best update of the season for their catalog. Feast your eyes on the new “Panerai Luminor California 8 Days DLC” with all its aged yet modern elements, attached to a bold cuff strap.

In a rather low-key demeanor this new Panerai manages to encompass quite a few of the brands best features. It comes in their iconic Luminor case with its crown guard and large overall diameter, but the use of titanium keeps its wearability on the light-side. While the DLC coating attributes a vintage-style look to this timepiece, despite its undeniable modern appeal. Then to top it all off there is the unique “California” dial alluring our gaze in its offset mesmerizing way. A callback to the early Panerai military diver models that tended to apply this “mixed” design option.

The 44mm case is made of titanium with a black DLC-coating, which gives it an anthracite color. On the flip-side the screw-on case back has been crafted out of stainless-steel and engraved with standard technical details.

As aforementioned the hefty size of this watch is adequately counterbalanced by the use of titanium for the majority of the cases diameter. All topped by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal that assists with water-resistance on this watch reaching up to 300 meters (984 feet).

Time is exhibited on a black dial with the iconic “California” dial which consists of a mixture of Arabic and Roman numerals, plus hour index markers. It may sound “messy” on paper, but the end result provides a simple yet remarkably endearing design with a bit of everything telling time. While also circling the dial is a rail-road motif minute index ring, assisting with precise readings at a glance.

The central hands on this piece have been given a blue outlining, which provides a subtle addition to the color scheme and overall look of the watch. To obtain this hue the hands are aged by oxidizing at about 300 degrees centigrade. These central hands along, with the Arabic numerals, Roman numerals and hour index markers that make up this “California dial” have been fitted with a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
