Times of war have always been times of great innovation. Although tragic and detrimental in the moments they occur, it cannot be denied their urgency to seek resolve have fomented some of humanities most ingenious inventions. To name just a few we owe: radars, microwaves and even the Internet to war! Horology also benefited greatly from tumultuous times, and among those creations was the “Panerai 721 & 720.”

Back at SIHH 2017, Panerai presented two limited editions of these historically inspired watches. They manufactured 500 pieces of the “PAM 720” and a 1000 pieces of the “PAM 721”.  These watches are almost identical to the original 3646 reference model.

Original Panerai with no logo PAM 3646, circa 1940’s

Both the PAM 720 and 721 are housed in a 47mm case made of stainless-steel with a polished finish and a transparent case back that allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement.

Mounted to the case is an also polished stainless-steel bezel. Also equipped with the thin wire-style lugs, often seen on the Radiomir models. Plus a small bevel setting-crown is on the right-side of the case. Water-resistance on this watch can reach up 100 meters (330 feet).

Time is exhibited on the iconic Panerai sandwich dial in black with the hour index markers and the Arabic numerals: 3, 6, 9 and 12. Featuring a pair of central hands with a blue outlining and that’s it for the PAM 721!… As simple as it can get, while still serving its function of telling time.

While the PAM 720 only differs by including the “RADIOMIR PANERAI” inscription below the 12 o’clock position.

Excluding that minor difference both dials are the same. The hands, hour index markers and Arabic numerals have all been attributed with a luminescent fitting, for an enhanced legibility. The lume on these timepieces has a faux-patina coloring for that extra vintage appeal, which has been a trending element in many recent horology offerings.

Panerai Radiomir 3-Days Acciaio – PAM 720 & 720

The “Panerai Radiomir 3-Days Acciaio” (Ref#: PAM 720 & 721) are both powered by a hand-wound mechanical movement, caliber P.3000 with 21 jewels, 16½ lignes, 161 components and 21,600 vph. Power reserve on these timepieces can last up to 72 hours (3 days), when fully wound.
