The Hublot brand has issued quite a few limited edition tribute watches in remembrance of hero’s past and others still present. The ranges of personalities to receive such a tribute have mostly been linked to the sports world. Be it: soccer legend Pele, NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, Formula One champ Aryton Senna, or NBA all-stars Kobe Bryant and Dwayne Wade. But, the latest homage is given to the former president and civil-rights activist: Nelson Mandela, who unfortunately passed away in early December of 2013.
This timepiece is the outcome of Hublot collaborating with the “House of Mandela Foundation”, the charity organization created by his family to preserve his legacy. Mandela aka “Madiba” was one of the world’s most prominent advocates for human rights and became the first black president in post-apartheid South Africa.
The “Hublot Classic Fusion House of Mandela” as its been designated, will come in two models, each limited to 95 pieces, one for each year of Mandela’s life. Its case is constructed of Hublot’s proprietary King Gold (an alloy of gold melded with elements of platinum), satin-finished gold dials, in a 45mm model powered by a caliber HUB 1112 and a 42mm version powered by a HUB 1110. Both calibers are automatic, with a 42 hour power reserve and both bearing black alligator straps with black stitching and black rubber lining.
Highlighting the memory of Mandela is an engraved totem of his family tree, represented by a bee with branched wings stretched out to symbolize the various ramifications of his family life. The inspiration for such imagery comes from the Mandela name, which signifies “Rolihlahla” in his native Xhosa language and translates to: “he who is brave enough to fetch the honey from the honeycomb”. This phrase can also be loosely interpreted as: “challenge the status quo” and values of: “courage, sharing and compassion”, all of which are traits that Nelson Mandela exhibited during all his 95years of timed life. His signature is also engraved on the bezel and an illustration of the African continent with the motto “It’s In Our Hands” was added to sapphire viewing window caseback. Hublot has stated that portions of sales well be donated to help the House of Mandela Foundation aid the education in South African children.
