Longines returns with a new addition to their “Heritage Collection” which combines the beauty of some of their most significant timepieces with todays cutting-edge watchmaking technology. This time they have rehashed a classic diving model, let’s take a peek at the new “Longines Skin Diver”.
The Heritage models are meant to be a tribute to the pioneering spirit that has inspired Longines designers since their adventurous beginnings thru the air, on land and under the sea. One of their most celebrated timepieces in this revival collection is the “Longines Lindbergh Watch 90th Anniversary” (Ref#: L2.622.214.171.124) we’ve previously reviewed here, among various other “Heritage” models we have also covered.
This new watch is inspired on one of the first original diver watches conceived by Longines, which was released back in 1959.
Now the newly released diving model has a 42mm case made of stainless-steel with a solid steel screw-on case back. A diver with a harpoon has been embossed on the center of the case back, as well as the inscription “THE LONGINES SKIN DIVER WATCH” and technical details circling around. Mounted to the case is a unidirectional steel rotating bezel coated in black PVD, which features a 60-minute scale engraving with a luminescent triangle that can be used to calculate immersion time.
It comes equipped with straight non-beveled lugs with polished sides and case flanks that are contrasted by the satin brushed finish on the tops surface. Its screw-in crown can set time and assists with water-resistance on this watch being able to reach up to 300 meters (984 feet). The crown also has an embossed criss-crossed net-style pattern, similar to the one see on the rubber strap option. All topped by a scratch-resistant domed sapphire crystal, with several layers of anti-reflective coating on both sides.
Time is exhibited on a matte black dial with an elegant grained finish, which also contributes towards a vintage “old-timey” looking aesthetic. The hour index markers, smaller minute markers and the Arabic numerals 3, 6, 9 and 12; have all been painted on. All these elements have been colored in a beige, faux-patina hue that gives this modern watch a vintage look and overall classic feel.
Besides these indications the dial also includes the Longines logo on the upper-half, while the lower-half has an inscription that reads “Automatic” in a cursive hand-written font. The central polished steel hands, Arabic numerals and hour index markers have all been fitted with a faux patina tone, which has a luminescent quality to it for an enhanced legibility.
