Every dial offers a canvas with an opportunity to make into a piece of art. Jaeger-LeCoultre has taken that notion back to the classics by reproducing three iconic artworks form three distinguished artists. Introducing these limited edition masterpiece inspired “Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Enamel” watches.
We’ve seen examples of timeless artworks being reproduced and fitted on Reverso timepieces before, such as in the “Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso in Tribute to Vincent Van Gogh”. A very rare watch that was limited to only four manufactured pieces and sold exclusively at the “Van Gogh Museum” in Amsterdam, which you can read more about here.
Although these homages to painters of yesteryear have permeated on to other models of the Jaeger-LeCoultre catalog, such as the limited edition “Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition à Répétition Minutes” (Ref#: 50924E1), as part of their “Métiers Rares Collection”. This model was also decorated by one of Van Gogh’s most famous compositions “The Starry Night over the Rhône”. More images and a review on this artfully painted timepiece can be read here.
Quite noteworthy watches since the expertise required to reproduce these iconic artworks on these miniature sized dials is quite a remarkable accomplishment. The level of detail even goes as far as to mimic each portrayed artist painting technique while applying it to the enamel. So each of the miniaturized paintings was reproduced by faithfully following the specific techniques each artist utilized for the original paintings.
The Georges Seurat model was achieved using pointillism, which consists of putting tiny dots of color side by side, instead of brush strokes that the spectator’s eye could naturally mix and blend.
While the Xu Beihong artwork was done with ink wash painting technique, which consists of a hybrid inking and painting technique done with a brush instead of a pen, while controlling the ink to water ratio.
And finally the Katsushika Hokusai’s theme watch was decorated with a Japanese woodblock printing technique.
The Jaeger-LeCoultre artisans were required to develop their own pointillism technique and tools to obtain the desired effect. While recreating the fluid ink wash of Xu was also a difficult feat due to the multiple layers of enamel involved. With all these detail oriented guide lines for each specific piece it’s easy to comprehend how each timepiece took over 70 hours of laborious painting and crafting, in order to achieve such high quality reproductions on the small Reverso canvas.
The 45.5mm case is made of stainless steel with the iconic flipside mechanism and a setting crown with the JLC logo engraving on it. Each dial side of this flip case is covered by a scratch resistant sapphire crystal. Water-resistance on these watches can reach up to 30 meters (98 feet).
Time is exhibited with two distinct sides for each watch, where one only displays the aforementioned artwork reproductions and the other side tells time with: stainless-steel dagger-style central hands, hour index markers and a white printed minute index grid following the rectangular case design.
