Our neighbors to the North recently celebrated IWC Schaffhausen opening two new boutiques in both Toronto and Vancouver. To further mark the occasion they’ve issued a Canadian themed limited edition of the “IWC Portugieser Chronograph Rattrapante”.
The first “Portugieser Chronograph Rattrapante” model by IWC came out in 1995 and after lying dormant for a few years, it has now seen various special editions. This current release has been issued to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Federation, which was formed in 1867 when the British colonies of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were united into the Dominion of Canada.
Another special edition watch by IWC that comes to mind for also being equipped with caliber 76240, is the “IWC Portugieser Chronograph Rattrapante ‘Boutique Milano’ Edition” (Ref#: IW371215). Packing the same complications and also produced in a limited edition run of 100 manufactured pieces to celebrate the IWC Milano boutique, in Italy, which you can read more about here.
The 41mm case is made of stainless-steel with a solid case back featuring an engraving of the “maple leaf”, which is the most recognizable symbol of Canada being featured on their national flag with the royal coat of arms. Besides the patriotic emblem each piece has its unique individual limited edition number engraved on it as well.
Comes equipped with two push-pieces for chronograph functions with a setting-crown in-between them. Plus an additional push-piece aligned with the 10 o’clock position that serves to stop the upper hand, while the lower hand will continue to move until the regular stop button at 2 o’clock is pushed. This allows for two short periods of time to be measured simultaneously.
So, when the rattrapante push-button is activated a second time, the split-seconds hand syncs up with the chronograph hand; no matter if it’s been stopped or is still moving. Topped by a scratch-resistant crystal that assists with water-resistance on this watch reaching up to 100 meters (330 feet).
Time is exhibited on a silver dial with stainless-steel applied Arabic numerals, followed by smaller round stainless-steel index markers, plus a printed black circle with minute index markers and Arabic numerals for every 5-minute increment. There are two sub-dials: a sub-seconds at the 6 o’clock position and a 30-minute counter at the 12 o’clock position. Equipped with rhodium-plated central hands and a red hand for the chronograph counter.
