These “Laureus Awards” celebrate the work of the “Laureus Sport for Good Foundation”, which supports over 100 community projects in sports throughout 40 countries. The aim of these projects is to use the power of sports to end violence, discrimination and disadvantage around the world. It’s named “Laureus” as a derivation from the Greek word for laurel, which was considered a traditional symbol of victory in athletics. A portion of the sales off these watches will go towards supporting the “Laureus Sport for Good Foundation”.
We also covered last year’s “IWC Da Vinci Chronograph Laureus Sport for Good Foundation” 2017 limited edition (Ref#: IW393402) and mentioned other previous editions, in a review you can read here.
This years “Laureus Awards” ceremony was held in Monaco, France and among the main honorees of the 2018 edition was: Roger Federer, Serenea Williams, Franscesco Totti, among other prestigious athletes. The full list of winners can be found here on the official Laureus website here. The 41mm case is made of a glossy black ceramic with a solid case back. Plus the individual number of each limited edition piece can be seen on the back, as well. It’s also equipped with a soft-iron inner case back, which protects the movement from external magnetism.
Topped by a convex sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides, the glass is secured against displacement by drop in air pressure. It’s also equipped with a screw-in crown that assists with water-resistance on this watch reaching up to 60 meters (196 feet).
Time is exhibited on a blue dial with white printed Arabic numerals, followed by a series of smaller white minute index markers with thicker indexes at each 5-minute increment mark. The iconic IWC “triangular” shape with a dot to each side is in the 12 o’clock position. The broad dagger-style central hands and the Arabic numerals and index markers have all been fitted with a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
