IWC Mark XVIII at SIHH 2016

For this new incarnation the “Mark Pilot Watch” has dropped a millimeter. And its official IWC Schaffhausen is making 2016 into the year they update their various pilot watch models. Right now at SIHH they’ve been unveiling quite a few to the world, but today let’s focus on the new “IWC Mark XVIII’.

The 40mm case is made of stainless steel with a scratch-resistant sapphire glass, rendering the watch water-resistant up to 60 meters (196 feet). The glass also has an anti-reflective coating on both sides. The caseback exhibits a special engraving of the “Junkers Ju 52” airplane.

This version of the Mark is a call back to simpler times, with a reduction to the essentials and a simple three hand design. Its inspiration can be found by recalling the “1948 Mark 11” watch. This model no longer features a triple date display, opting instead for a simple day-date aperture at the 3 o’clock position.

As for the dial it can be had in either a silver-white or in black. The watch uses Arabic numerals, including the number “9” that had been missing from the “Mark series” since the 2002 edition. While the number “12” has been excluded to include the iconic triangular index which appears below the chapter ring, in the 12 o’clock position.

IWC Mark XVIII

This “IWC Mark XVIII” (Ref#: 327001) is powered by a self-winding mechanical movement, caliber 30110, with 21 jewels. The power reserve on this timepiece can last up to 42 hours. Mounted to the watch is a black Santoni calfskin strap, or there is an option of a beaded satin-finished stainless steel bracelet.
