As celebrations keep wheeling on in, we arrive at IWC Schaffhausen to admire a 50th anniversary timepiece to honor their partner Mercedes-AMG. This time around they’ve made their “Ingenieur Chronograph Sport” out of titanium, while adding some unique automobile inspired elements.
This sporty watch is reminiscent of the first Ingenieur models that were released in the 1950’s. IWC has attributed the watch with some distinctive vintage looks, while preserving its round case design. Placing the more eye-catching elements on the dial, such as red highlights and a thunderbolt hand in the sub-seconds, besides the refreshingly unique case back.
The 44mm case is made out of titanium, but instead of opting for the traditional closed solid case back or a soft inner case, which provides a magnetic field protection, IWC has made a creative choice. They have placed a case back with a sapphire inset pane, allowing to view inside but not at the movement. What we get a glance of is the iron inner case, which has been crafted as an AMG brake disc with indentations arranged in a radial formation, keeping with the automobile motif in this timepiece. There are two push-pieces on the right side of the case to operate the chronograph functions, with a screw-in crown in between them. Water-resistance on this watch can reach up to 120 meters (393 feet).
Time is exhibited on a silver-plated dial with Arabic numerals in five minute markers instead of hourly, as well as dotted hour index markers. A ring of minute index markers circles the dial, followed by a tachymeter scale circling farther out near the bezel. Hands and hour index markers have been fitted with a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility. There are two sub-dials: a double chronograph register at the 12 o’clock position and a sub-seconds at the 6 o’clock position. Also features a date aperture at the 3 o’clock position.
The color scheme applied on this dial resemble the standard color combinations encountered at racetracks, with the red and white curbstones and black asphalt. An enriching feature on this watch is the ability to leave the chronograph running, allowing it to be used as a second time zone.
