Celebrations at IWC Schaffhausen for their historic and noteworthy 150th anniversary keep delivering. This time we take a moment to overview the “IWC Big Pilot Annual Calendar ‘150 Years’ Edition”.
We’ve been covering many of these 150th anniversary timepieces, that have all been given either a white or blue lacquered dial, such as the: “IWC Tribute do Pallweber Edition 150 Years” (Ref#: IW505002) which was inspired by the original Pallweber pocket watch that can be dated back to 1886, more details can be found here.
We also covered these two IWC “Portugieser Constant-Force Edition 150 Years” and “Portugieser Perpetual Calendar Tourbillon” both jam-packed with complications in a legible and elegant design, as you can see here.
Or, if you’re a more demanding horologist you’d be more than proud to obtain the “IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar 150 Years” (Ref#: IW503405) which will keep you on track with minimal winding and setting, as we’ve explained here.
Now this latest offering by IWC comes in a 46.2mm case made of stainless-steel with a transparent exhibition case back, which allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement. Such as an inlaid Jubilee gold medallion with a commemorative “150 Years” inscription, to mark this historic milestone in the history of IWC.
Also comes equipped with the iconic large onion-style setting-crown and small stubby lugs for a proper wrist fit. All topped by a sapphire crystal that further assists with water-resistance on this watch being able to reach up to 60 meters (200 feet).
Time is exhibited on a blue lacquered dial with white printed hour index markers and Arabic numerals, followed by smaller white printed minute index markers circling the dial. Instead of a numeral at the 12 o’clock position we have the iconic IWC triangle with a dot to each of its side.
There are two sub-dials: a power reserve indicator at the 3 o’clock position and a sub-seconds at the 9 o’clock position. The annual calendar has been laid out in an American-format display with three separate windows for: month, date and day; that have been placed on the upper half of the dial, under the 12 o’clock position. The central rhodium-plated dagger-style hands, sub-dial hands, numerals and index markers have all undergone a luminescent coating, for an enhanced legibility.
We must recall that the annual calendar we have here differs from a perpetual calendar in the sense that one requires more adjusting. An annual calendar can’t compensate for the leap days in February during leaps years. So, once a year at the end of February this watch will require a manual adjustment, which is corrected quite swiftly and headache free via the setting-crown.
