Hublot has brought innovation to the horology industry before through the use of unique materials for manufacturing watches. Their savoir-faire has been applied for adapting ‘magic gold’, which is the world’s only scratch-resistant gold in to watches. And now they’ve focused their expertise and cut straight into sapphire in order to create the limited edition: “Hublot Big Bang Unico Sapphire”.
Sapphire is a very difficult material to mold. But, after Hublot developed a special edition of their: “MP05 LaFerrari” in a sapphire version, in order to showcase the inner workings of that particular watch. They were left with the urge to keep experimenting with this unique and transparent material. Which has now led to this recent “Big Bang Unico Sapphire” with 500 pieces produced, an unprecedented scenario of cutting sapphire in such a large scale.
The 45mm case middle, bezel and back of this “Hublot Big Bang” is cut from blocks of polished sapphire. And what makes this so impressive, besides stunning to the eyes, is the fact that sapphire is almost as hard and scratch-resistant as diamonds. The Mohs scale which measures the hardness and resistance of minerals, attributes a 10 point value to diamonds and 9 points to sapphire, revealing their similar robustness. Only a few elements forming this timepiece were not made of sapphire. The spine of the watch which has a titanium framing; the screws, crown were over-molded with silicon and the titanium deployment buckle.
This skeleton dial is made from polished transparent composite resin, revealing the moving parts found in the interior of the in-house caliber Unico HUB1242. Also exhibits Arabic numerals and features two sub-dials: a 60-minute counter at the 3 o’clock position and running sub-seconds at the 9 o’clock position. The “Hublot” brand logo is also in white lettering slightly under the 12 o’clock position.
