COVER-Glashutte-Orange-2019

Just last year Glashütte released one of the most impressive and uniquely designed dial we got to see on the horology circuit. Now they return to market again with the same concept in a new color hue option, while also offering a no-date and date model. Make way for the new “Glashütte Original Sixties Annual Edition 2019”.

As aforementioned last year Glashütte released a green version of this timepiece, which we covered and you can read more about here. The main selling point of this watch is its dial design that has the ability of catching the eye, while also keeping a certain low-key mystique to it. This low-relief pattern is based on the use of a 60-tonne press, which was already used by Glashütte back in the 1960’s at their factory in Pforzheim, Germany.

The “Glashütte Original Sixties Annual Edition 2019” comes in a 39mm case, while the “Panorama Date” version has 42mm. Both are made out of stainless-steel with a polished-finish and a raised sapphire crystal case back, which allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement.

Just likes its previous green incarnation it comes equipped with a setting-crown and stubby, long protruding lugs that are slightly curved for a comfortable wrist fit. All topped by a domed sapphire crystal that also assists with water-resistance reaching up to 30 meters (96 feet).

Once again we get to marvel at this uniquely mesmerizing dial by Glashütte for their “Sixties” collection. The two available versions are almost identical, besides the differentiating feature of one model including a date composition and being housed in a slightly bigger case.

So, in similar both have their time exhibited on a multi-toned dial that starts off with a golden center that gradually flows and shifts to orange and red before reaching the black perimeter with a unique dégradé effect. The process involves a galvanic bath before the artisans carefully apply a series of layers in red and black lacquer using a special spray gun. This airbrushed method renders each dial with unique nuances. Then to finalize the lacquered dials are heated in a kiln in order to burn in the colors.

Plus stainless-steel applied hour index markers and the Arabic numerals for the 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock positions. These numerals have also been fashioned in a uniquely styled font, which integrate very well with the overall textured look of the dial.

Also circling around the dial in the darker circumference where the reddish-orange fades into black are white printed minute index markers, with white dots for every five-minute increment. Underneath the 12 o’clock position is the “Glashütte Original” logo, while above the date aperture is the “Glashütte USA” inscription and “MADE IN GERMANY” can be seen on the inner flange near the 6 o’clock position.

The stainless-steel central hour, minute and second’s hand, as well as the dotted hour index markers have been fitted with a luminescent filling, for an enhanced legibility. Plus the “Sixties Panorama Date” version features a black aperture duo disc date positioned on the central vertical axis, on the lower half of the dial with rotating white numerals.
