Glashutte 4

In an industry dominated by the “Swiss Made” stamp of approval, it’s always refreshing to observe the outsiders who manage to rival and keep the horology market interesting. The German brand Glashütte is one of those, returning to Baselworld 2016 with 2 new models, in various configurations and a new in-house mechanical movement.

First up let’s take a look at the “Glashütte Original Senator Chronometer” a marine inspired chronometer that was originally launched in 2009. The 42mm case is made of 18k white gold with fluted lugs. The sapphire crystal caseback allows to visualize the movement, with its famous three-quarter plate, screw-mounted gold chatons and hand-engraved balance cock. Water-resistance on this timepiece can reach up to 50 meters (164 feet).

The dark blue dial keeps with the Glashütte tradition of initially issuing timepieces in vibrant shades of blue. A custom that has led their designers to create nuanced hues of blue, to key their releases diversified and feeling fresh. Just like the present one, whose dark blue tone discreetly emphasizes the finely grained and lacquered surface it portrays with a velvety texture.

Time is told with oversized Roman numerals and there is a sub-seconds dial located above the 6 o’clock position. Features a panorama date window at the 3 o’clock position, a white rail tracks ring and pear-shaped blued hands. There is also a day/night display to simplify the date setting, which is placed in a round opening located above the center line, nearer to the 12 o’clock position, inside the power reserve display. This opening appears in white from 6am to 6pm; after that the opening appears in black, for visual legibility.

There are 2 cases, but 3 dials available for this particular timepiece. Two versions in stainless-steel and red-gold with Roman numerals and blue pear-shaped hands on a white dial. While the other is a stainless-steel model with a black dial, elongated white-gold swords hands and green Arabic numerals with a SuperLuminova coating.

Everything else on the dials from the logo to the railroad minute ring is engraved and galvanized in black. Except the minute numerals on the red-gold version, which are printed in red instead. An intriguing detail, one may not notice at first, is the upside-down Roman numeral “VI” at the 6 o’clock position.
