The Cat’s Eye model line originally debuted in 2004 and was seen as so innovative that it received many high praises and awards, such as “Watch of the Year”. Since then Girard-Perregaux has kept looking for ways to keep the novelty factor alive in this timepiece. For 2016 the iconic “Cat’s Eye” returns with an aventurine dial.

Aventurine is Italian for “adventure”. And thus continues the 225th anniversary celebration of watchmaking for Girard-Perregaux. The origin story for this material claims that back in the 17th century, in Murano, an artisan glassmaker accidentally allowed small bits of metal to fall into the translucent paste. And from this fortunate accident came this technique for making “aventurine” glass. Now, the joint venture of aventurine, feminine shapes and artful complications, have given way to this elegant ladies watch.

The 35mm oval shaped case is made of 18k pink gold and features a blinged out bezel that includes 62 set-diamonds. Lugs on this timepiece are nice and wide securing the strap tightly to the wrist. Has a sapphire crystal caseback, secured by 4 screws, which allows to see the inner workings of the movement, with its:

chamfered grained mainplate and bridges; also decorated with a Côtes de Gèneve motif. The gold oscillating weight also features a “GP” tapestry pattern. And the crown on the side of the case was molded in the form of a flower, adding more subtle touches to appeal to a womanly market.

This aventurine dial is no doubt one of the most alluring factors in this timepiece. Its overall blue color with sparkling elements, seems to recall a night sky full of stars. Time is exhibited via diamond hour index markers and one only Arabic numeral, for the 12 o’clock position. Pointing out current time are leaf-shaped hands for the hours and minutes; accompanied by the baton-type hand for the sub-seconds.

Also features an elaborate and feminine moonphase, inside the sub-seconds counter located over the 6 o’clock position.

The day/night disc is made of 22k pink gold and has been engraved with a sun and a moon, which alter their positions during the 24 hours it takes to complete a full rotation. This dial also includes in its midst a total of 18 diamonds.
