As many brands (especially Omega) have taken this moment in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, others have also embraced the occasion. Among those brands is Girard-Perregaux that has released a new edition to their vintage-inspired “1966” collection. After the simpler ref#: 49555-11-433-BH6A that came in a limited edition of only 149 manufactured pieces; they now return with this new “Girard-Perregaux 1966 Blue Moon” that includes a date calendar.
It seems Girard-Perregaux was inspired by earthly elements for this latest edition, hence this being part of their “Earth To Sky” models division. If one recalls that the exosphere is the outermost layer of the Earth’s atmosphere, while reaching in towards civilization fades into blue; that explains this chosen color scheme. Also since many have been celebrating the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, this spacey analogy and back story tie in well with referenced narrative.
The 40mm case is made of a micro-blasted stainless-steel with a black DLC-coated finish. On the flip-side there is a sapphire crystal exhibition case back, which allows to view the inner workings of the mechanical movement.
It also comes equipped with a setting-crown and small stubby lugs, which provide an accommodating wrist fit. All topped by a glare-proofed sapphire crystal that also assists with water-resistance on this watch being able to reach up to 30 meters (96 feet).
Time is exhibited on a sun-ray brushed gradient blue dial with baton-type steel applied hour index markers. At the center of dial we have a prominent blue that gradually grows darker as it reaches out towards the periphery of the dial, eventually fading into a deep black tone.
On the lower-half of the dial is a sub-dial that functions as a pointer-type date calendar display, while in its midst we can also find a steel-toned Moonphase. All the date’s numerals have been printed in white, except for “31” which has been highlighted in red to mark the end of the month. The central leaf-shaped hands and long thinner seconds hand have all been crafted out of stainless-steel.
