On June 17 and 18th the official “FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC)” will be underway. This year they will be racing with their two Porsche 919 Hybrid cars, competing in the LMP1 category, which is the second most important competition. In this secondary category “endurance” is the key word, serving as a good trail run for pilots to develop their skills on, as they progress to a higher level.

Another difference between this and the main competition is that the “Le Mans Prototype 2” (LMP2) class is reserved exclusively for private teams, independent of constructors and engine suppliers. Although they do share traits with the “LMP1” competitors, like: being equipped with carbon monocoque chassis and keeping the car budget under $500,000 USD.

The 45mm case is made out of titanium with a black DLC treatment rendering this watch practically scratchproof. Plus a sapphire crystal see-through case back that allows to view the inner workings of the movement. Its wide bezel is secured to the case by eight black PVCD-treated steel screws. Also equipped with a stainless-steel screw-down crown, which assists in enabling water-resistance on this timepiece to reach up to 100 meters (330 feet).

Some similarities between the watch and racecar are the: car chassis is made of light aluminium and carbon fiber composite, while the timepiece is made of the aforementioned ultra-lightweight bead-blasted titanium. Also the turbochargers of this racecar are maintained at an optimal RPM via an electric engine that enables maximum acceleration thrust, while the new in-house Chopard caliber movement beats at an ultra-high frequency of 57,600 vph. Another comparison is highlighting the energy efficiency of the Porsche 919, while also noting the 60 hour power reserve of this Chopard, despite its high frequency energy consuming mechanical movement.

Time is exhibited on a black dial with white hour index markers and the Arabic numeral at the 12 o’clock position. While a series of smaller minute index markers circle around the dial, and further near the bezel are Arabic numerals in 5 minute increments, to further facilitate reading time at a glance. The hour and minute hands are arrow tipped and poses a semi-hollow body, while the seconds hands is thinner with a red tip to stand out.

Four signatures have been engraved on the upper top half of the dial to define and inform this watches personality. First off the Chopard logo written with baton-type letters; followed by the “Chronometer” inscription assuring this is a movement certified by the COSC; and the letter “H” with an arrow sign signifies this is a high-frequency watch by Chopard.

A small red element with “919” in white is seen on the bottom half of the watch aligned with the 6 o’clock position, referencing the Porsche connection. There is also a date aperture at the 3 o’clock position and a power reserve reminiscent of a fuel tank indicator, located between the 8 to 10 o’clock positions.
